Living with Change
There will be times in all our lives when we find ourselves moving towards the unknown. Whether it is in starting a new job or relationship, moving to a new place or perhaps coming to terms with a loss or an illness, life is full of moments of change.
Yet it is in our nature to take comfort from the familiar. As humans we find reassurance in the recognisable which means that we can place great value on stability, often instinctively looking to maintain an equilibrium in both our internal and external lives.
The comfort that we gain by preserving the status quo around us, can in fact provide us with a false sense of security where we begin to believe that we have more control over our lives and experiences than may be true. Despite on an existential level, being aware that the future is unknown and that all life is in fact a journey towards an indeterminate future.
This disparity between belief and knowledge may explain why we find transitional moments in our lives so difficult to navigate and why uncertainty can often be the root cause of so much anxiety that we face. Therapy can help us explore our experiences of the world, helping us become more comfortable with the roles we play in our lives and the lives of others.
In understanding ourselves, we are therefore more able to develop our awareness of what we can and cannot control, today and in the past. This understanding can lead to an improved sense of our own personal agency and a more secure belief in self to emerge. It is this growing belief that can then give us the inner confidence to meet the inevitable uncertainties of the future.
